“I’m big on finding out about things when I hear about them. I found out I had rheumatoid arthritis and started looking at what it is. The long term effect was important to me. I came to see Dr. Wei at AOC of Maryland and started in a research study. I’ve heard of people thinking they’ll be treated like a guinea pig but I decided to try it anyway. This couldn’t be further from the truth. If you want to get better you need to find the time to do it. I wanted to be better as soon as I could and being in the research study started me on my way. It’s important to me that a doctor take their time and talk to you because if they can’t, they’re not working on my body. Dr. Wei was one on one with me, there was no mystery about my treatment. My feet and ankles were the most painful. There were days I couldn’t work. I work standing a lot and I could hardly even walk. After being in the research study my pain is almost completely gone. I still have some bad days with my ankle but we’re working on that. My father has rheumatoid arthritis also but it’s too late to help him. I look at him and see a mirror reflection and wish he would have gotten help sooner before his pain got out of control. I’m not going to let that happen to me – you just need to find the time and want the help. I’m almost to the end of the study now and can’t stress enough how much it has helped me!"

With Fibromyalgia I had my good days and bad days, and I usually crashed on the weekends, because I would push myself too hard during the week. I work a full time job and I focus my energy into being able to perform my job at the highest level possible. Most often this leaves me drained on the weekends and I have to limit what I was able to do during my leisure time. I became involved in a Fibromyalgia study and I felt that my life had changed. I felt great during the study. It made me realize how good I could really feel and it gave me the hope that with the right course of meds, that my fibromyalgia could be controlled and managed!

“I felt trapped. The pain was everywhere. It was like being the silver ball in a pin ball machine. Every time the ball hit to score, my pain level increased to another level. There was no end and no way out. I was an active person. I was the 4H leader for our local group, went to my son’s soccer practices and never missed a game. I participated in living history events, active in church events, loved to cook and keep an orderly home. I was working in a position that I had strived for all my life. I learned what I needed to do to take control of my life and what was truly important to me. The care I received continues to meet my expectations. I feel if I can help be a part of finding better treatments and possibly cures, I can save someone else from going through the agony, I am happy to do that. Some of my illnesses are being controlled with the help of change in my life style, medications, and continued treatments. We are working on current aches and pains slowly. I think the biggest reward from going to Dr. Wei was getting hope when there was none. Even when I am at my worst and go for an appointment, I feel better when I leave. “I was encouraged to consider an osteoarthritis knee study as a healthy control subject—as I thought I was in great physical shape and could contribute something to Arthritis since it runs in my family. As a healthy control subject I needed to consent to a knee arthroscopy. It was during this arthroscopy that Dr. Wei discovered that I have some pretty aggressive osteoarthritis. Totally surprised and a little overwhelmed—I didn’t realize that this was something I would have to deal with. After the procedure, Dr. Wei suggested some exercises and some ways to slow down the progression of my disease. I am so glad that I volunteered. I don’t want this disease, but I have it! I would never have known I have it…unless I volunteered in this study. I am now enrolling in my second knee study—and am very glad that I can participate in something that may help future generations. “I had lots of pain and was depressed! I was not able to function well in any phase of my life! I have been under Dr. Wei’s care for 15 years. During that time, I have been offered the opportunity to participate in several different drug study programs. Mrs. Heimer had seen other specialists before coming to AOC. Once Dr. Wei saw her he was able to diagnosis her condition quickly and begin an aggressive treatment. I consulted both 2^nd and 3^rd opinions.” We asked Mrs. Heimer about her concerns of possibly receiving placebo or potential side effects. She says, "placebo wasn’t a concern, because placebo is harmless. And, if I experience a side effect I report it. The research team keeps in contact with me regularly. I feel more than comfortable in their hands and I don’t want anyone else to live like I have had to.”

Walter Pretka enrolled in an osteoarthritis study, which offered one of two treatments and no placebo. He says, “being in this study has been a very pleasant experience. I not only look forward to results in my osteoarthritis, but for those who may develop this disease in the future.” He continues, “I look forward to participating in future studies.”

During the time that Mrs. Strite has seen Dr. Wei, she says "he's been a tremendous help. I have arthritis and a lot of knee pain. The treatments have had very good results." Mrs. Grove saw several doctors and specialists for her pain and symptoms before coming to Dr. Wei. She was more than relieved when Dr. Wei was able to provide a diagnosis—fibromyalgia. Mrs. Ahalt began seeing Dr. Wei in February 2006 with chronic pain and fatigue all over her body but more-so in her knee. Immediately, Dr. Wei had a pretty good idea of her diagnosis, but followed up with lab work and an MRI before presenting a treatment plan. It’s been more than 6 months now, and Mrs. Ahalt implores, “anyone who may be feeling as I felt should see Dr. Wei. “My family doctor was giving me cortisone injections for my pain. I continued to receive these for over a year. I called Dr. Wei’s office about two years ago because I was referred by a neighbor. When you participate in a research study with Dr. Wei you get all of your lab work and medication free. It really works well for me. I plan each month for my visits so time is not a problem. “I would wake up at night with so much pain that I had to get out of bed. The pain was in my shoulders and in my neck. It comes quickly and unexpected. I was never sure if it was my arthritis or because I picked up my grandson. I was cautious when I would get out of bed. I was careful not to move my body because the pain would kick-in at any time. Raymond Poole has been coming to the Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland (AOC) for almost 20 years. He has Rheumatoid Arthritis. He says, "the pain hurts so bad, that it keeps you from doing anything you enjoy.” Mr. Poole skeptically enrolled in a research study. He is now in the extension study and he says, “that I have benefited 100%. I can do almost anything that I want to do. It was worth the chance to feel better.” Mr. Poole continues, “When you’re feeling intense pain, you’re willing to take any chance to feel better.” He adds, "When you’re in a study, you are monitored each month, you have lab work every month, and the communication between Dr. Wei and the study team make you feel very “taken care of” and I recommend anyone who might be feeling similarly to get involved.”

Kenneth Earle came to see Dr. Wei almost 12 years ago. He was in his 30’s with a new baby boy and lived with incredible pain. “The pain in my feet was so intense that I was crawling to the bathroom at night and unable to function with normal daily activities.” After seeing doctors and specialists he saw his future in a wheel chair—his son would become involved in sports and other activities, and he would be watching from the sidelines in his wheel chair. “I suffered severe pain in my knee. Walking was a very tiring and painful task. The pain in my knees affected almost all aspects of my life. I could no longer volunteer to do fingerprints at the Maryland State Police because I had to stand the whole time. After 15 years of volunteer service, I could not longer do it. I was unable to attend most of the meetings for the Masonic Fraternity for almost two years. It was too much trouble to get dressed, walk to my car and walk into the facility. I really want to be able to do these kinds of activities again. The pain I have has affected my relationship with my wife. I’m ashamed. I can’t even carry out the garbage; my wife has to do it. Mr. Land has been in several osteoarthritis knee studies. Now enrolled in his third study, he reports, “it has been a great benefit for me”. I was looking forward to the opportunity to try the FDA approved drug, Celebrex—when so many others are leery about it. I found it was helpful. The research team is amazing. They ask me lots of questions, they call me, and they work with my schedule. I think you’re in good hands when you participate in a study.”

“I couldn’t turn my head very well from side to side. It was very uncomfortable and painful. I did wear a neck collar when I rode in the car. I would tense my neck when driving because the pain was so bad. I also wore the neck collar at night because it supported my neck and I was able to sleep better. When I wanted to do any activity I did them in pain. Dr. Wei recommended I start the electrical stimulation treatments and said it might help. I’ve had several treatments and my pain level has gone down. I don’t wear the collar as much but I do feel support from it. The collar gives me comfort. My pain level started around a 4 or 5 and now it’s down to about 2 or 3. I am able to turn my head from side to side now with less discomfort. I would recommend this treatment to others. I like it because it helps. It is worth doing as an alternative to taking another pill or getting another injection.”

Mrs. Changizi has suffered from osteoporosis for a long time. It primarily affected her wrist and low back. Her back pain limited her activities, making it difficult to get in and out of bed and cars without help. She came to Dr. Wei, who gave her a back injection and started other therapy. After three months, she felt much improvement. She is able to exercise and walk 6 blocks every day. Mrs. Changizi says that coming to AOC “is like going to my friend’s house. At a normal day at the market, I mentioned to a woman waiting in line with me that my ankle was bother me—shrugging it off as rheumatism. In response, the woman mentioned that she worked for the Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland and that Dr. Wei specialized in arthritis and that he may be able to help. She handed me a Gift of Health card and explained that my first visit would cost me nothing. At my appointment with Dr. Wei, he was able to provide a name to my aches and swelling and started me on a drug called Methotrexate. It’s been a miracle in how much this has helped. I can do the things that I enjoy, I have more stamina, and the change has been a miracle! I’ve been a patient for almost 6 years. Dr. Wei gives me relief, and his staff is warm and helpful. I recommend anyone who experiences similar symptoms to see Dr. Wei.

“I’ve had a lot of digestive problems for a long time. I was tested for all kinds of digestive problems and nothing was ever found. I had the Immuno testing by Dr. Wei done. “I have post-polio syndrome. The pain in my legs and hands is unbearable at times. My joints are swollen and painful. Arthritis had taken over my fingers and arms. I tried all kinds of over the counter medicines and rubs and nothing helped. I dreaded to see night come because I knew I’d be up most of the night. It just got to the point where something had to be done. I had brought my wife to the Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland (AOC) a while ago for her osteoporosis, so I decided to come see Dr. Wei too. I figured he could help me too. “The pain in my ankles required me to wear ankle splints. I also had severe pain in my back and hips, and I ended up in the hospital. In 1992, I came to the Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland because I was losing feeling in all my extremities. Doctor's had never given me a diagnosis, but Dr. Wei provided one almost immediately. We tried a couple of different medicines, which weren't very helpful. “I had screened for a research trial at AOC of Maryland and had an EKG done. It was abnormal, and Dr. Wei suggested I see a cardiologist.
